The Wisdom of Islam: A Practical Guide to the Wisdom of Islamic Belief

Product Description
This introductory guide has been written especially for the enlightenment of Western non-Muslims by a Western convert to the Sufi order of Islam. Author Robert Frager asserts that, although many books written by scholars and historians present very good intellectual accounts of the religion, they often fail to convey the emotional and religious experience of devout Muslims. Thus, he illuminates the actual experiences of Muslim men and women in Islamic society and discusses their spiritual yearnings, their conception of the beauty of prayer, the glories and hardships of pilgrimage, and the inspiration of the Sufi ceremony of Remembrance of God. He presents an overview of Islam’s foundations, scripture, and history, then concentrates on Muslim psychology, emphasizing the typical Muslim’s ambivalence toward Western culture. He also discusses women in Islam, including the tradition of the veil, the segregation of women, and the wide variations in the roles of women in modern Muslim communities. The book has approximately 150 full-color illustrations that include historical images and contemporary photography.

The cover should tell everyone about the ‘wisdom’ of Islam, a Burka/Abaya wearing woman, her husband not in the picture is happy to see his wife in Purdah while he puts on Jeans and western wear. The essense of Islam is in Sura 4:34 where the beleiver is told to beat his disobedient wife. This is the wisdom. The Wisdom is in the passages ordering the beleiver to kill off the pagans? The passages that glory in booty, that describe sex with slaves. Is this wisdom. Sufism is a nice ideology, however one cannot escape the central tenants of Islam. The central intolerance, and hatred. It is a tragedy, Sufis generally would like to present the wiser, gentler side of Islam, but in the end how can one be taken in by the wisdom of a call for world domination under theocracy?

This is one of the finest introductory book on Islam that I have come across. The author has intricately woven the outer and inner dimension of Islam so successfully as to leave the reader with a vicarious experience about Islam deeper than the intellectual absorption of information. In retrospect, only a person who is trained both in the outer as well as inner dimension can achive this. I stongly recommend this.

Okay, so there is no mention of wife beating, hejib, polygamy, jihad, of subjugation of “infidels”, or terrorism. If you’re looking for that read The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam by Spence, The Dhimmi by Bat Ye’or, and Slavery in the Arab World by Murray Gordon. Moreover, there are also some books by devout Muslims that I find daunting.

This book, however, presents an extremely positive spiritual side of Islam. I read most of it in a bookstore cafĂ©. I was in a rotten mood and found it to be very uplifting and inspiring. I am an ESL teacher who works with students from all over the world. I’m glad to know that there are some positive aspects of Islam to which I can refer. Moreover, on the positive side of Islam I recommend stories of the Mullah Nasrudin.

After the tragedy of 9/11 I thought it wise to try and understand what motivated such an act of violence. As a non-Muslim I had only a fragmentary idea of the faith, only gleaning what little I did know from a few Muslim students with whom I had contact, some of whom had become quite Westernized. After first reading the Qur’an I found this very informative book by Robert Frager. Here Islam is reviewed from a Sufi prospective. While not deep, the essence of Islamic belief and the divisions within the religion are well summarized and I think that this is a very worthwhile exposition of the history and practice of Islam throughout the world for the non-Muslim. I hope that it will lead to an understanding of the Qur’an’s teachings and of both the strengths and weaknesses of the practitioners of the faith on which the book is based.

Like all other major religious faiths, Islam suffers from its extremists. In these people’s view certain parts of the Qur’an are held up as more important than others, just as some Christians uphold some parts of the Bible and ignore others. Both the Qu’ran and the Bible have been used for evil and will continue to be so used as long as their readers are humans. Reading “The Wisdom of Islam” is a start to an understanding of the basic faith of Islam. Islam is, in fact, no more a violent religion than Christianity (people may forget or ignore the Inquisition, the Crusades, the witchcraft trials and the general intolerance of some Christians toward people who don’t believe as they do.) It can be perverted to condone violence, very much as other faiths (and political systems) have historically been.
