A jihad is a holy war, whereas the crusades were the senseless slaughter of innocent people based solely upon their beliefs. Primarily due to the fact that they refused to believe as the Catholic crusaders believed, which meant the act was one of violence and hatred and not one of faith.

Crusade is a military campaign to (re)capture a location.

Jihad is a total war.

In conception & execution, both have been the same. Both had its ideology in the “Defence of the Faith” and the “Destruction of the Non-Believers”. Both fed on the belief that Death for the cause will lead to Martyrdom and a place in Heaven. They encompass marked intolerance, violence and basically everything that is actually opposite of what the religion actually preaches.
