What Role Does Ishmael Play In Muslim Belief?
A few questions to Muslims.
Is Ishmael considered to be the father of the Arab peoples?
If he is, does this mean that the Arabian tribes are descendents of the Egyptians as well as the Hebrews, since Hagar was an Egyptian woman?
What other role does Ishmael play in Muslim belief? Is he considered a prophet?
What does Islam say about Isaac and his descendents?
Thanks

First off, the son of Abraham (Ibrahim) is called “Ismail” in Arabic, and should be referred to as such in Islamic context, not “Ishmael”. I suppose it’s okay for you to call him “Ishmael” if you are referring to him in the context of Bible literature…
Secondly, Ismail (pbuh) is considered a Prophet by Muslims because God says in the Qur’an:
Qur’an (19:54):
Also mention in the Book (the story of) Isma’il: He was (strictly) true to what he promised, and he was an apostle (and) a prophet.
Ismail (pbuh) helped his father rebuild the Ka’ba in Mecca on the site where Adam had originally built the first house of prayer to God:
Quran (2:127):
And remember Abraham and Isma’il raised the foundations of the House (With this prayer): “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us: For Thou art the All-Hearing, the All-knowing
Qur’an (2:125)
Remember We made the House a place of assembly for men and a place of safety; and take ye the station of Abraham as a place of prayer; and We covenanted with Abraham and Isma’il, that they should sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or use it as a retreat, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).
Furthermore, Muslims believe in ALL the prophets of God who came before the Seal of them all, Muhammad (PBUH):
Qur’an (2:136)
Say ye: “We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam).”
You should seriously read the Qur’an if you have more questions. Here is a good link to search for keywords in the text:http://www.islamicity.com/QuranSearch/
UPDATE: Point well taken. If you don’t know Arabic, then I suppose you’ve just learnt something new! Peace to you too.

Advent of Prophet Isma’il and Desertion by his Father:
The Prophet Isma’il (peace be upon him) was the eldest son of Prophet Ibrahim (peace he upon him) by his second wife Hajira. As he had no off-spring from his first wife Sarah, he entered into matrimonial allegiance with Hajira, a devoted lady. He did so with the consent of his first wife. The Prophet Ibrahim (peace he upon him) prayed to his Lord to bless him with a son. The Prophet Isma’il (peace he upon him) was born to him in response to his prayers. The Holy Qur’an makes mention of it in these words:
“Ibrahim said: My Lord! Grant me of the doers of good deeds. So We gave him the good news of a boy possessing forbearance.” (37: 100, 101)
Shortly after his birth, in obedience to a Divine behest, he was left by his father Ibrahim (peace be upon him) along with his mother at the place where stands Ka’bah. It was a barren and waterless place with no trace of life in any form. The great Patriarch, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) left them to their fate with a heavy heart and prayed:
“O’ Lord! I have made some of my off-spring settle in this barren valley near the Sacred House so that they may keep up prayer.” (14: 37)
I don’t know about Hagar’s heritage, but yes, Ishmael WAS the “founder” of the Islamic tribes, but only because she was thrown out by Abraham after Sarah/Sarai (his old wife) announced that she was pregnant.
Yes, the SEMITIC people includes both Arabs AND Jews, due to this, Most people on either side and including those with ulterior motives (turning Arabs and Jews against each other) are reluctant to accept this fact. But fact it IS, like it or not:
Jews and Arabs are BOTH Semitic and also related!
Ishmael is the ancestor of Arabs, including Prophet Muhammad.
I believe in Islamic tradition, we use patrilineality lineage, so it means Muhammad (and also the Arabs) are the descendants of Ishmael and Abraham.
We believe that It was Ishmael (and not Isaac) that was to be sacrificed. And every year muslims remind that moment in Aidul Adha.
Ishmael and Isaac were prohets, along with Jacob, Joseph (son of Jacob), Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Job, John The Baptist and Jesus.
