Fasting is a way to detox and a way to humble yourself. In Judaism, they fast for Yom Kippur, which is the time of year when Jews reflect on the past year, things done good, and mistakes that were made. In Islam, they fast for Ramaddan (not sure the significance). In Christianity, fasting is more of a personal experience that is not usually coordinated with others.
