Online Charitable Network Gives Muslims Opportunities To Give And Receive

It was in October of 2004 that Hasan Johnson, a Muslim, a professional social worker and community activist, got the idea to use the internet to help those in need. He readily admits that the idea is not all that exciting or new and credits another online network for inspiring him to create the Muslim Support Network, a yahoo group that he started in November of 2004.
Â?I had heard about this online network called Â?FreecycleÂ? that allows people to Â?recycleÂ? items by giving them away to others for free and was completely thrilled at the ideaÂ?, Johnson said. Â?As a Muslim, I thought about all of the opportunities and spiritual benefits that could become available to Muslims if there was a network similar to freecycle but that was customized for MuslimsÂ?.
Where the Muslim Support Network differs from freecycle is in its spiritual aspects and what members are able to offer and seek from other members. When Muslim Support Network members sign up, they are told that the network exists primarily as a way for them to help out other Muslims and to hopefully receive blessings for their charity.
Members are able to offer and seek out personal items such as clothes, appliances, bicycles, books, furniture so long as they are free. Members post what they want or what they are offering and make arrangements privately off the network. Â?If people need a roommate, they can seek it out on the network. If a masjid needs a contractor to donate some services, that can also be sought out on the networkÂ? said Johnson. In addition, members can also post event information for non-profits, third party information that can help others find the help they need along with requests and offers for prayers for sick and needy people. Â?WhatÂ?s also really unique about the network is that we also allow members to offer their expertise and knowledge as wellÂ?, Johnson said. Â?So if a member needed legal advice or if a doctor was offering free checkups, members could take advantage of those offers or tell others about themÂ?.
The network does not allow solicitations for money, partisan posts, spam or business oriented posts unless there is a direct and verifiable benefit to a charitable organization. Â?We have very strict rules that are in place to safeguard the integrity of the network and to ensure members that there are standards and a level of transparency that aims to minimize abuse from unscrupulous membersÂ?, said Johnson.
Johnson says that the primary geographical area of the network is New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. However, people all of the country are free to join. Â?ItÂ?s my hope that others pick up on the idea and duplicate it all across the countryÂ?, said Johnson.
