Ashura: Mourning the Death

Muharram is the first month of Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the Holy months according to Islamic belief. Shiite Muslims observes the first ten days of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his family at Karbala. The tenth day is particularly important and is called Ashura. This slideshow captures celebration of Muharram at Kolkata, India. India has second largest Muslim population which is expected to have exceeded 150 millions by 2006 though its only 13.4% of total population. Only 20 millions of Muslim population is estimated to be Shias.
